24-player beta test

We are currently beta testing a special update to CTGP-R and you can participate! This new update adds the ability for up to 24 racers to play at once in both offline and online mode (in friend rooms). To participate, you must get a beta code. These can be obtained by subscribing to MrBean35000vr on Twitch. Subscribing is a great way to support the development of CTGP-R, and in doing so you will get early access to the 24 player mode! People with codes can also gift them to other Twitch users. The codes permanently unlock access to the beta test for a single Wii or Wii U console. Currently we are expecting the beta testing period to last until whenever Bean gets back to working on the mode.

Current Status

We currently know about the following bugs in 24-player mode. If you see anything that is not on this list please report it at MrBean35000vr's Discord server.

  • Coin Runners does not work with 13+ players (blocks entry if you try, you can still play it with less players).
  • Item rain runs very badly on complicated race courses (slow framerate).
  • In 2P local multiplayer (and maybe others) you may see other human players driving star-powered vehicles when they haven't used a star. This is only a visual bug, however, and you won't be hurt if you touch them.
  • Some battle stages and race courses have framerate issues because 24 player mode is not yet fully optimised.
  • Some special CTGP text is missing in-game (specifically in race menus) and shows the normal MKW text instead.
  • There are minor animation issues with some of the new 24 player menu screens. It doesn't affect their functionality, however.
  • In all split screen modes, having more than 12 players causes names drawn above opponents' heads to render incorrectly (point at the wrong place) on P1's screen. This includes online split screen.
  • In award ceremony cutscenes, CPU races sometimes do not appear on the podium. When this happens characters appear higher than they should on the podium.
  • At a Team Race result screen, having less than 24 players can result in duplicated players in the results.
  • Some tracks do not load with high number of players, teams and item rain. This is due to poor memory optimisation.
  • Demo mode crashes if it reaches coin runners with more than 12 players.
  • In a Team Race, items sometimes have the wrong team colours.

FAQ

What is a beta code?

A beta code permanently unlocks access to the 24-player beta update for one Wii or Wii U console. You must have a beta code to participate in the beta update.

How do I get a beta code?

You can get a beta code by subscribing to MrBean35000vr on Twitch. People with beta codes can give them to other Twitch users.

How do I use my beta code?

Beta codes can be entered into the CTGP-R channel from the Updates menu. Press X or 1 in the Updates menu to access the beta code entry menu.

How many codes do I get for subscribing? Can I get another code?

A tier 1 or Twitch prime subscription on Twitch unlocks one code per month. A tier 2 subscription unlocks two codes per month and tier 3 unlocks six codes per month.

Does my code expire? Do I need to keep subscribing?

No; a beta code permanently unlocks access to the beta. It does not matter if you remain subscribed.

What is a beta update?

Beta, or prerelease updates, are updates that are working, but not totally complete. They may be missing certain features that will be in the final version of the update. In the case of this 24 player beta, Coin Runners is not working with more than 12 players, and several modes (such as Item Rain) have not been optimised yet for use with more than 12 players, and thus may run slowly if played. You may also encounter minor gameplay/menu bugs, but there shouldn't be anything completely game-breaking, this update has been tested thoroughly.

What do I need on my Wii in order to join the beta?

You need to have a working, fully updated version of CTGP Revolution on your Wii or Wii U console. You will also need a working Mario Kart Wii game disc from any region except Korea (Korean discs are sadly unsupported at this time). An Internet connection on the Wii/Wii U console is also recommended, but not required.

What will happen to my CTGP when I enter a beta code?

After entering the beta code, you will be moved to the Updates menu. The updater will then download the additional updates required to play 24 player mode. After all the files have installed, you will be able to activate it in the Settings menu and play!

How do I use 24 player mode once it's installed?

In the CTGP-R Channel, go to the Settings menu, and click the 'More Settings' button until you reach page 3. On page 3, you will see a setting called 'Player Count (Offline)'. You can change this setting to affect how many racers there will be in offline races, from 2 to 24. For online, there is a setting on Page 5 that you can set for friend rooms that you host.

Can I still play online with players who aren't using this beta update?

Yes, you can, it will still be possible to play Worldwide matches, and Custom Tracks Worldwide matches as normal. You can also play in friend rooms with people who are not on the beta version, as long as the 24 player features are disabled. It is not possible to play 24 player mode with someone who is not using this update.

Can I still participate if my Wii has no Internet connection?

You can, but you will need to manually update your CTGP by moving the beta update files to your SD card. A download link will be provided alongside your beta code after subscribing, after making sure you have done all other updates from the Updates list at our website, download the ZIP archive from the link and extract the files to your SD card's root. The CTGP-R Channel will notice these files when you next load it, and will update to the beta version, allowing you to play 24 player mode! It is VERY important, however, not to install those files onto a Wii console you did not enter the MAC address for, otherwise you will be locked out of the CTGP-R Channel!

What happens when 24-player mode is released publicly?

When the beta test period ends, all CTGP-R users will get access to the 24-player mode. All beta codes will expire and the CTGP-R channel will automatically update to the main version.

I can't afford to subscribe. Can I still play 24-player?

If you have Amazon Prime, you can link Amazon Prime with a Twitch account in order to get one free subscription per month. This can unlock a beta code. Alternatively, someone with a beta codes that they don't need could gift a code to you.

It is important to remember this is just a beta test of the 24-player mode. 24-player will eventually be added to CTGP-R for all users for free. This beta test period is when the initial bugs will be found and fixed, and participating in the beta allows people to get earlier access to 24-player mode.

Will I get access to future beta tests too?

The codes here only unlock access to the 24-player beta test. In future we may or may not use a similar system.
